Pricing Clarity for phone numbers

3 months to go from today, the way businesses promote service numbers 084, 087, 09 and 118 directory enquiry numbers is changing. The reason behind this is simple… we just don’t know how much they cost to call. So from the 1st of July 2015, Ofcom are introducing a new way to make clear the cost of phone calls from land lines and mobile phones.

The cost of the call will be split into 2 parts. The Access charge and the service charge. The access charge is the cost of the call that goes to your phone company. This is measured in pence per minute. Your phone company can tell you how much access charges are for all service numbers. The service charge is the rest of the call cost per minute and is decided by the organisation you are calling.

When you see a service number advertised, the cost of the call will be displayed like this. (e.g. calling an 087 number)

“087X XXX XXXX Calls cost 13 pence per minute plus your phone companies access charge”

The 13 pence per minute being the Service charge. If your phone company charges 2 pence per minute for its Access charge, then the cost of the call would be 15 pence per minute. Its really important that you get in touch with your phone company and get a price breakdown of the access charges for each different service number type.
